Game of Thrones: Who Will Sit Atop the Iron Throne at the End of Season 7?
Dany is the clear favourite to be ruling Westeros at the end of the next season. From episode one, her journey has been leading to King’s Landing and it wouldn’t make sense for her to fall short of it. It’s probably inevitable that she will rule, but the question is whether it will happen in season seven. A sea battle with Euron Greyjoy could delay her arrival and then there’s always the possibility of the show swerving us down a different path. However, here is no safer option than the Mother of Dragons. It might be too straightforward for Game of Thrones, but seeing Dany rid us of the Lannisters in season seven before uniting with Jon Snow for the battle against the undead in season eight, could be the path the show goes down.
Odds of being on the Iron Throne: The closing shot of season seven will be Dany on the throne… probably.
Cersei has been plaguing Westeros from episode one, but she has never been more dangerous than she is now. Her children are dead, she’s the undisputed Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and, you know, she has wildfire. Cersei has to be a strong candidate simply because she is the current ruler. Someone would have to overthrow her by the end of season seven to claim victory and despite the fact that it’ll probably happen eventually, we can’t be sure it’ll happen within the time frame. Sure, nobody in Westeros (besides Qyburn) wants to be under Cersei’s thumb, but outside of Daenerys’ force, it’s hard to see anyone being able to take her down. She is the Game of Thrones.
Odds of remaining on the Throne: Don’t bet against it.
Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish
There are theories that suggest the entire plot of Game of Thrones, starting from Robert Baratheon overthrowing the Targaryen’s, was set in motion by Baelish and who are we to deny it? It would appear everyone is a pawn in his game of chess and he has made some big moves in the last few seasons. Could we see him and Sansa on the throne together with the latter turning on Jon? You can’t rule it out but with only 15 episodes left, not everyone can ascend to the Throne and maybe Baelish will fall short because of it.
Odds of being on the Iron Throne: Higher than Jon, but still low.
You’re probably thinking Jon Snow is missing from this list, but his path leads north in season seven and not to the Iron Throne. Miniscule chance he’ll be ruling.
There are a number of other characters who could possibly achieve it. Tyrion Lannister is probably the most popular candidate, but as Dany’s Hand of the Queen, it’s hard to envisage a scenario whereby he becomes king. He’ll probably just remain her Hand. Sansa Stark will only get there if Baelish leads her to it and her sister Arya doesn’t seem the queen type. If Cersei goes down, her brother Jaime will either take her down or go down with her so you can rule him out and the Iron Throne is probably beyond the reach of any of the Greyjoy’s. Gendry is another possibility, but only because of his Baratheon blood.
Of course, this is assuming there even IS an Iron Throne at the end of season seven. It seems probable that its destruction will occur at some stage during the show. Could Daenerys burn it down?
